Partial success, but partial fail (BCR2000/MKS50)

2016-10-13 by caverhill2004@...

It appears, using Mode S4, that I got MKS50.syx (from this group) loaded into a Preset on my BCR2000. That's great. Unforutnately no response from the MKS50.

I have the BCR and MKS, and my control keyboard, all connected to my MIDI patchbay with the control keyboard and BCM merged into the MKS. The MKS MIDI indicator flashes and the synth plays sound in response to they keyboard but doesn't do anything when I turn knobs on the BCR. The BCR shows red LED activity on MIDI OUT A when I move knobs.

MIDI Exclusive is on in the patch (on the MKS) I am trying to modify via the BCR.

Any ideas?

Use a midi interpreter like MidiOx to see what is happening.
As I said I am sure I use s3 between Miniak and BCR2000 so.that messages from Miniak update BCR display and vice versa.

I rarely use the learn functions. Typically i read the sysex in manual - Miniak was different - AKAI didn't supply it!

Sometimes there are.modes on the synth that stop.it send messages..other times the synth can send real.time clock messages that prevent learn working well.

Mark's BCR manager is a must IMHO. You can edit and layout panel much easier than official tool.

The other thing to consider ....have you looked at Ctrlr? I used this to write panels for Kawai K1r and K4. It's pretty good on Mac, PC or Linux

Here's a link to Ctrlr and MKS50

What kind of MIDI patchbay are you using? If the MKS MIDI indicator flashes, when you tweak BCR knobs, but there's no change in sound, then most likely it would be a MIDI channel mismatch (in most devices "MIDI" LED means "incoming MIDI messages", not "incoming MIDI messages that I know how to process"). If the indicator doesn't flash, the routing in the patchbay is not working, as you would expect.

I tried a couple of things today:

BCR connected directly to MKS (in/outs of both). Nothing seems to register on BCR when trying to 'learn' from the MKS.

Tried same cables hooked directly to computer's interface. I was able to send a dump to MIDIOX, and MIDIOX sends to MKS (MIDI indicator lights up on MKS when playing MIDIOX keyboard).

But changing patch/tone parameters doesn't seem to show/register anything in MIDIOX.

Still puzzled :(

Not sure if you have tried this but the learn function is looking for the value range, you need to go from value 0 to 127 or whatever it is, it might take a few tries, either way you can always type in the sysex string and max value on BC manager.
Hope this helps

Do mean Program Change midi message?
Just a though ...

Often this gets filtered depending on synth settings and/or patch bay.

Also if you use different midi channels then only the synth listening on that channel will respond.

Is it possible the MKS template is generated for midi channel 1 (ie 0) and your MKS is on a different channel?

There are OMNI ALL modes etc that can transmit on all channels - best to avoid since patch change on synth 1 would change all.

In my setup I don't respond to patch change EXCEPT on the Kawai's. They live other end of garage studio and I used K1r rarely (but it is still a nice synth) and K4 I use as midi controller for my ESi (61 note, up to 8 zones and channel aftertouch - ideal match).
I use GEM s2 to control the poly aftertouch modules.

The only thing I do different from most is to use Arduino as a midi "man in the middle" processor to change channel of NRPN requests, zone keyboard, split and layer, filter out some real time messages some synth sends (including the FE heartbeat crap)

Thanks. I finally got some recongnition on the BCR with the MKS but at this point only get "bad". It's a positive step though. This only happens double tapping the tone button. I have extensively tried the value range, which seems to me should do something, but so far nothing happens on BCR with this.

I may typing in the sysex string and max value on BC manager but that's all getting pretty complicated, in my mind, for me:)

Thanks Stephen. You kinda went over my head there. I have tried to ensure all is on same MIDI channel and that OMNI was off (I was wondering about turning it on but with what you said here I won't).

I will keep plugging away.

BTW...years ago I had the K1m. I still miss that little module. It was great for it's day, and I still like it's character (I did sample a few of it's patches way back and still have those).

Sorry ... didn't mean to.

Keep it simple.
So MKS via midi into PC
MIDIOX. .. in and out are fine (in of MKS goes to out of PC and in of PC goes to out of MKS - check the interface on a working synth also ... Seen some interfaces wired wrong way!l

At this point assuming the MidiOx isn't filtering you should see data.

Then build in the patch panel etc.
If that works .. then move to BCR.

Sorry if you already done this

Ok something to try without much messing around with midi routing.
Download alphabase from here ROLAND MKS-50 SYNTHESIZER UTILITIES

Freeware, then connect the MKS via midi to the pc, if it responds to the Alphabase software you can then connect the BCR to the pc via midi and map (learn) from the Alphabase output, I've just tried it and the BCR does map the sysex output, some editing of the parameters might be necessary after mapping but you are 90% of the way done.

Hope this helps
