How to make a BCF2000 touch sensetive in Logic

2005-11-29 by mycamkd

OK, so just got the money together to get a powerMac and upgrade to Logic Pro 7 from
Pro 6, had some cash leftover so I thought I'd r=treat myself too a control surface, didn't
have that much spare change so I opted for the Behringer BCF200. I just got it yesterday,
looks pretty nifty for such a low price.
So I get hold of LC Xview ( http://www.opuslocus.com/lcxview/ ) and windowshade
( http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/wsx ) so I can see what I'm doing on it, upgrade the
BCF2000 to version 1.10 plug in, all working fine, cool I can now move my faders, pans
plugins ect. It's a little bit fiddly and noisy, I can accept that for the price, I'll learn the
commands on there once I get to grips with it.
Now what I do next is test writing automation using the faders, I do a run and play it back,
fantastic, I think to myself this is gonna make life so much easier. So i then try to write
over my automation, oh my god it doesn't work I want my money back, what a pile of junk.
OK panic over, I'll search the forums to find a way to make writing over automation easy,
without fighting faders, theres the option of putting it in write mode, no good if any other
automation is on there, theres the option of fiddling with midipipe and merging a
keyboard, nope too long drawn and fiddly (Plus I only have the one keyboard which I use
to play). Nothing on line to help me, mmm think I might return it and save up for
something better.
Then eureka, I work it out, what I wanted was to push a key or button to fool Logic into
thinking that the fader (of a touch sensetive king) had been pressed, so after a couple of
hours of trying to find a way I got it, and here it below.
Sorry for the long winded intro, it's just that I'm quite excited in having worked this out,
plus I feel a little too big for my boots right now

Now the following steps will make your BCF2000 almost touch sensetive, in doing this you
will lose the 8 Function keys (automatically set up for your screensets, for which I use my
number pad anyway, it's right next to my BCF2000).

What I've done is reassigned the buttons, so what was mute is now a button which when
pressed tells Logic that a touch sensetive fader has been toched, so you can write over any
automation without fighting the motorised faders, when the button is released the faders
go back to moving around to whatever automation was already there. This means that
you'll have to use two hands to do it and you'll be limited to doing this with 4 channels at
a time (four fingers on the buttons and four on the faders), unless you have more than two
hands.

When finished your top buttons (the first ones directly under the V-Pots) will have these
assignments.

Top button - Touch on/off
Lower shift and Top Button - Mute
Upper shift and Top Button - Solo

Now heres how you do it,

In logic go to preferences>control surfaces>controller assignments

Now go to Tracks>(no Mode)> Ch 1 Fader

Follow the same path for fader 1-8

In the dialoge box copy the following into Touch/Release, replacing what was there

For fader 1 - 90 10 Lo7
For fader 2 - 90 11 Lo7
For Fader 3 - 90 12 Lo7
For Fader 4 - 90 13 Lo7
For Fader 5 - 90 14 Lo7
For fader 6 - 90 15 Lo7
For Fader 7 - 90 16 Lo7
For Fader 8 - 90 17 Lo7

Next go to Tracks>(nomode)>Ch 1 Mute

Follow the same path for mute 1-8

In the dialogue box copy the following into Value Change, replacing what was there

For Mute 1 - 90 36 7F
For Mute 2 - 90 37 7F
For Mute 3 - 90 38 7F
For Mute 4 - 90 39 7F
For Mute 5 - 90 3A 7F
For Mute 6 - 90 3B 7F
For Mute 7 - 90 3C 7F
For Mute 8 - 90 3D 7F

Next go to Control Surface: Logic Control>(No Mode)>F1

Follow the same path for F1-F8

In the dialoge box delete the data in Value Change
Do this for F1-F8 (if this last step isn't done every time you mute a track Logic will change
screensets)

Now this isn't perfect, for example when pressing the lower shift the channels that are
muted are no longer lit up (but they do remain lit when the shift button isn't pressed), but
it works and I think makes the BCF2000 a much better device, if only Behringer had done
something like this with the LC emulation mode.

Oh yeah, hope I dont get in truoble but I'm posting this in the Logic control forum and the
Logic 7 forum (cuse the Logic control forum doesn't seem to have that much traffic)
