I most likely will roll my own .bin's depending on how much I like the exfade version that you mentioned. I mean, what fun is having an eprom burner if you're not going to make your own :) 

As far as the sample memory, it will turn into 4 banks of 4 when you swap the two stock 256k chips for the 1megs. A 4013 ic is used to do the bank switching for both chips simultaneously with a 4-way rotary. So for instance you get a 909 kit + 4 samples, turn the dial... 808 kit + 4 samples, etc. You could however set the sample banks to switch independent of the kits if you prefer it that way, which I may look into.

Are you going to ROM your own sounds, or just use the ROM images that are available of TR808/909 and Linn drum sounds for it for this purpose? What chip were you going to do the sampling expansion with?
