PSU WallWart question

PSU WallWart question

2005-07-04 by skye

Hi all,
I found the following wallwart psu at the local Jaycar (Australia) -
can anyone please advise as to whether this is suitable to drive the
CGS +/-15 PSU for, say, four Steiner vcf's and a couple of util LFO's?

17V AC unregulated / 1.25A
+/- and Earth connections.

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3022

Thanks!
Skye.

It won't have +/- connections if it is AC - just two AC connections.

This one would also work:

What's more, they would power a lot more than you are suggesting. 500ma
would be more than enough.

Thanks Ken!

oops, my theory's obviously a bit lacking.

One question - the schem has a pad for center tapping from the
transformer, but the psu you linked to has only two wires.. how does
this work?

Thanks again,
Skye.

These power supplies are single voltage output ones only . The Earth is not
connected to either of these but can be if desired for safety reasons. You
would need two of these for Kens equipment or any system requiring both a +
and a - supply.

You need to move down to N16680 which is a dual output unit but hen it
doesn't have enough volts for this application

There is a note on the page about it. When using a single coil transformer
or wall-wart/plugpack, you connect one of the AC wires to the center tap,
and the other to one of the two AC inputs. The other AC input is not used.
This means you will be running the power supply as half-wave rectification
instead of full-wave rectification. For the limited load you are proposing,
this won't matter. If you were planning to really load up the supply with
extra modules, you would need to go to two plug-pacs, or a center tapped
transformer like Laurie says in his reply.

Cheers,

Ken
