Finally! The Wave Multiplier is built.

Working my way through the queue of unfinished modules, today was Wave
Multiplier day! I had assembled the PC board over a year ago. The
Stooge panel arrived last fall sometime. We moved to a new house last
February and I have been getting my synthesizer area set up gradually.
Since moving I have completed four modules including the Dual Cynthia
Sawtooth Animators, a dual Oakley ADSR-VCA (of the last available Oakley
kits - a very nice module), my CGS Digital module, which includes a
Pulse Divider, Gated Comparator, Quad Logic Gate, and five CGS 56 boards
all behind a single 2U MOTM panel with 32 jacks, and now the Wave
Multiplier. The Digital Module was the most complicated physical
assembly so far, what with eight PC boards behind one panel. I promise
to provide photos at some point.

The Wave Multiplier was by comparison a piece of cake to build, the
hardest part being drilling the Stooge panel. I've just patched it up
and I'm getting some really rich textures from it. I found that the
Offset CV makes a great phaser-like tremolo with a sinewave LFO. The
pulse output retains the wave folding qualities with the pulse timbre.
I patched the folds and pulse outputs in parallel through the Oakley
ADSR-VCA modules and mixed them in stereo with slightly different
Left-Right mix and different envelopes. Wow. Very cool spatial effects.

I am very happy with the Wave Multiplier. It lives up to its
well-deserved reputation. Thanks, Ken! And what a simple circuit, too.

I am also happy with my recently completed Wave Multiplier, although I am
somewhat non-plussed by the Grinder section. It seems that its two controls
have basically the same effect on the timbre, although with slightly
different ranges of operation and some interdependence. It also sounds more
like a resonant filter than something I'd describe as a "grinder". Do other
Wave Multiplier owners observe similar behavior in their grinders, or is
there something wrong with mine?

Hi Adam!

What IC are you using? From a brief look at the archives, it seems
much has been discussed about finding the best sounding IC. Usually,
LM358 with poor slew are the best choices. If you've got a socket on
the pcb for this IC, it would be best to simply audition all your slow
dual opamps with the same pinout.

I'm using an LM358, since that's what the instructions called for. It is
socketed, so I could try something else, but I'm not sure that I have any
other slow dual op-amps on hand. I might have a 4558 somewhere; I'll have to
look around.

It would help if I knew what the thing is actually supposed to sound like...
Alternatively I guess I could put up samples of mine and someone could tell
me whether or not it sounds the way it's supposed to.

Check out the Files link- Coyote4.mp3 is a pretty good grinder sample.
Also, the grinder will be more subtle on various waveforms. I don't
have the module, but the grinder circuit makes sense. A chip with a
low slew rate will make all the difference. Maybe if you just bought
ten LM358's and auditioned them, one would stand out. The LM358 has
quite variable quality.

Basically the grinder is exploiting exactly what you DON'T want in a typical
servo system (such as the feedback of an op-amp. It causes the op-amp to
overcompensate, then overcompensate in the reverse direction etc,
effectively causing a high pitch ringing on the output wave. If you have an
oscilliscope, it can help choosing a chip.

I still don't fully understand what I should expect from this module. I
listened to the sample file in the yahoo group archive, and since I don't
know what the original signal was, I can't glean much insight.

Since you said that an oscilloscope can help choosing an op-amp that does
the right thing, here's a screen shot of a square wave run through my
Grinder section, with both controls set to their middle position:

In this file I start with both controls rotated fully CCW. I turn one all
the way up and then all the way back down, then the other all the way up and
all the way back down, then one up to its middle position and leave it
there, then turn the other up to its middle position. If you can't tell
which knob is which, then you're understanding my point. :-)

See the small "ringing" at the bottom of the lower "square" wave? You should
be seeing that at about 5-10 times the amplitude on both the top and bottom
excursions from a squarewave input. You are seeing ringing, but it appears
to be happening across the whole signal. Do you have the correct capacitor
in the feedback loop?

It is producing some of the sounds I would expect. At around the 4 second
mark it is sounding pretty correct. You will find it is frequency dependent
to some extent (a fixed lag versus a varying input frequency) so that may be
why you are finding the pots do "the same thing". These pots are unlike the
usual pots say in a filter, where you have two clearly marked functions (res
and freq), which is why they have somewhat unusual names, i.e. drive and
lag. Drive determines how much signal is being fed back, while lag adds time
lag to the settling of the servo loop.

If you're referring to coyote4.mp3, I couldn't remember the patch for it,
but found it in my original post:

I posted a sound file in the files section called coyote4.mp3. It's
an example of Ken's Wave Multiplier mangling a triangle wave from a
single VCO. The triangle wave is first applied to the grinder
section, then patched back into the triangle input. It's then
patched from the folds out, through an MS-20 low pass filter clone,
VCA, delay and VC Small Stone phase shifter clone. The folds and
offset are modulated by complementary voltages from the EG. The phase
shifter is modulated with the inverted EG signal as well.

Thanks for your help, Ken--I appreciate it. The capacitor was the problem. I
foolishly substituted a 4n7 for the 5n6, thinking that it would be close
enough. My bad! I put a 1n in parallel and the Grinder works much better
now. It produces a much wider and more interesting range of timbres.

Overall it's a very cool module, BTW. I set it up in a 3U panel in my
mostly-MOTM system, with all three modules (multiplier, simple folder, and
grinder) available on separate jacks.

Now that you have your gringer all figured out, it's time to play
with the other parts.

One of my favoite Wave multiplier patches is to use 3 sweeping audio
signals, 1 each into the fold, offset, and audio inputs.

Oh yeah. I've already been doing that, believe me. It's very nice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I like it with three triangle waves. I
discovered, though, that you don't have to have anything plugged into the
signal inputs if there's an audio-frequency signal in the Folds CV input. I
haven't tried using a scope to figure out what's going on, but I'm guessing
that it's folding a tiny amount of DC offset at audio rates, maybe?

The "offset" is what you are experiencing. It is a deliberately introduced
DC voltage, either by the offset input, or if installed, via the offset pot.

Ah, of course, thanks. Yes, I have pots on Folds, Offset, and PWM, as well
as CV attenuator pots on the CV inputs for the three.

Take a look at the schematics. It's a 4 input inverting mixer
stage. The Triangle Input and it's pot are interchangable with the
Offset input and its associated attenuator.
