Module Selection

Module Selection

2006-01-12 by c10h14no2i

Hello,
I need some help selecting some modules. I know its a person thing,
but I was wondering what other people think are some essentials.

Right now Ive got the little PAiA 9700 modular. Its got 2 ok VCO's, 2
2 pole filters, 2 very basic lfo's, 1 envelope, 1 vca. Im definately
going to get another filter. The one its got is ok, but I want one w/
a more standard sound. Other than that, I dont know what to get. Ive
been reading and researching for weeks, and the more I learn, the more
I want!
I want to limit myslef to one more frac rack enclosure (thats what
paia calls its case.. not sure if thats a standard or not)
Basically I could fit about 3 or 4 large modules, or a bunch of
smaller ones.

What I want are some better sounds, and a lot of modulation options.
The paia alone can't make any complex sounds. Basic bass lines, or
some strange ripped up tones (like from modulating one osc w/ the
other one) are about all I get. Nothing very good or interesting.

My brain is about to explode from all the synth reading Ive been doing
lately, so any advice to get me started w/ building would be a great help!

Thanks
scott

Hi Scott,

Since you are posting here, you are probably considering CGS modules.
These require a considerable DIY skill. You can get lots of help on
this list. Look at Elby Designs for some CGS kits:

For Frac rack style, check out Blacet

http://www.blacet.com/

Soon Synthesis Technology will make some very good modules available in
Frack Rack format. It's not on the website yet, but keep checking.

I build in the MOTM panel format, so I can't give a lot of Frac Rack
advice. It is a reasonable choice for value.

For complex sounds, CGS is a good source. The Wave Multiplier is
awesome. I highly recommend the Synthacon filter too.

I would get another envelope to modulate a filter. More VCO's. A self
oscillating filter of some kind. A S/H maybe with a noise source. Check out
the new MOTM frack rack stuff coming out soon. They will incorporate well
with your PAIA. And that's just the beginning!

Thanks for your response.

I don't necessarily need to stick to this small frac rack format, but
if Im building the modules myself, I probably will. I don't want to
limit myself to only frac rack size modules, though.

I am still learning the electronics, but I have considerable
construction skills. I can solder and I can make the panels and
brackets and all. I've put together a lot of various electronics kits
over the years. Another hobby of mine is designing and building RC
airplanes. Not quite the same, but involves some electronics and
fabrication. I wont, however, be designing my own synth modules any
time soon.

Im thinking about ordering a kit or two from Blacet, but am running
into the same problem Im having w/ picking out the CGS modules. The
more I read and try to decide what I want, I more I think I need all
of the modules :) (and Im trying not to spend too much money)
