steiner filter problems

steiner filter problems

2006-03-30 by josh summitt

I have two steiner filters that i have built and neither one will work. I
have no output and the pots don't seem to do anything. When i touch the
bare metal of the resonance pot, the output buzzes real loud. I don't
understand what could be wrong. I have checked the resistors and caps
several times and they are all correct values and position. I have applied
an input to all three inputs and still nothing on both filters. Where should
i start looking for problems. My o-scope shows a sharp decrease in the
signal right after the first resistor on the LP input and i have no output
on the 2n3907.
any sugestions
thanks
Josh

Exact same problem that i had, with the perfboard one that I built. :(
Waiting until I can order 1 or 2 boards of it, before I attempt to
build one again. :(

I noticed some verbage about the electrolytics being backwards on one board
and not on the other. I am using the Rev 1 and i assume that capacitors are
labeled correctly on this board. Can anyone confirm this. Has anyone been
able to get this filter to work?
Thanks

Yes, mine is working fine and has been from the moment it was built.
Made no changes. Just built it according to Ken's web page (and
on Ken's PCB as well).

I have also built the Steiner VCF and implemented John Loffink and Richard
Brewsters mods for 1V/oct as well as adding a second FM and FM pots as per
the schematic on Richard Brewster's webpage and it works perfectly, great
module...

I believe the Elec Caps on the newer boards are correct...

I am still very new to this and don't understand much besides reading
instructions, so far all the CGS items I've built work great (knock on wood
as I am working on another 4 right now)...

For reference:

http://www.pugix.com/bottom-cabinet-lower.htm#synthacon

Click the schematic link to get the GIF.

BTW, it is not exactly 1 volt/octave, but it is in the ballpark. Both
of my filters work fine. I beta-matched the transistors to get a
similar response in both filters.

Well thanks, i'm going to hash out whats wrong with them tonight. I love the
samples of this filter and cannot wait to get it finished.

Still not getting it. I have been tracing my input though the circuit and i
loose it entirely at the 2.2nF Capacitors. so i have no input into the base
of the 2n2222. I have no idea what is wrong unless i have the wrong
capacitors. Does it matter here what type of capacitor that you use. I am
useing Polyethylene Metalized Film capacitors. I can not imagine that this
would cause any problems. What kinda of caps are you guys using that got the
filter to work?

These caps are critical. I used Mouser 23PS222, Polystyrene Film
Capacitors. Same capacitor as in the CGS VCO.

Have you checked that the actual circuit-board trace is working at the
2.2 cap? When I built mine (which I was never able to get to fully work,
alas), I found the traces to be very delicate and easily destroyed by
only a couple of resolders, that is, they'd break where the trace meets
a mount point. So try a patch or two - that may be it.

Re: steiner filter problems

2006-04-01 by josh summitt

Got IT!!!! After hours of trouble shooting i figured out it was not the
transistors, then it was not the caps, so i was left with the diodes. I had
originally thought that these diodes where from a different manufacturer
that i have used in the past so maybe for some unknown reason that don't
work. I am thinking anything to get this thing to work. So i still have some
of the old diodes and start removing the newer ones. One of the pads pops
right off as soon as i get the solder wet. So that was my problem. I get
everything back together and great sounding filter!!!!
Thanks for all your help. I guess this board just has bad traces or the
copper is too thin.

You're telling us you knew you lost the signal at some point and
you hadn't checked the traces for connectivity with an ohm meter? ;-)

Re: steiner filter problems

Hey, I checked. But i guess when i put pressure on the pad it make contact
and checked ok. sheesh give me some credit. :) Now i get to make some front
panels. I want to put the evil transformers logo on the panel and call it
'Dasynthacon'. I think that would look really cool!
