Question about the drum simulator

Question about the drum simulator

2006-11-05 by kidkrazy58

Hi im new to this group and i joined it cause i really like these
modules. My question is that i have completley prototyped the drum
simulator on my bread board and now im trouble-shooting it. After
counting all my components ive noticed that two caps the 100n's are
totally left out of the schematic unless im continully over looking
them. Also i bought a +/- 15 volt power suplly. I havent used many
bipolar power supplies before though. There are four little
connections on it that are unmarked but as far as i can tell i only
need three i think. the positive the negitive and the ground. Is 0v
the same as ground? I cant tell the difrence between the two with my
voltometer. Right now all my drum sim does is when i plug it in it
makes a popping sound like 2 times a second that i cant change with
the pots to anything. And the top light blinks and thats it.
im still trying to troubleshoot it.Im gonna trigger the drums with my
tr606 since it has two trigger outs on it. If anyone could let me
know about any of these problems i would really apreciate it. And by
the way im kinda new in diy electronics Thanx.

Hi
Welcome!

the caps are not shown on the schematic, if you look at the pic of the
PCB you will see them. The 100n caps are for decoupling the power
supply, Ken (and many others) don't usually include them in the
schematic because they are a given and just clutter it.
If you leave them off when breadboarding, it shouldn't make much
difference.

Also i bought a +/- 15 volt power suplly. I havent used many

I would not like to guess the connections on your PSU, is there some
documentation for it online? Most bipolar supplies have two ground
connections.
Normally 0V is the same as ground.

check everything is alligned in the correct direction.
check the ICs are getting the correct power to the appropriate pins.
did you use bipolar 10uF caps on the outputs?
good luck

OK thanks for all the help so far, sorry for the long delay but ive
been kinda busy with class and stuff. I can respond alot quicker now
that mid terms are over.
Well i figured out the problem with it jus turning on and off
constantlly i think i grounded pin 4 on the first ic instead of
putting it on the -15V.
My only question now is the harmonic content pot. It barley seams to
do anything at all really. Ive cheacked everything and i tried
useing diffrent pots that seemd to help only slightly. I know i used
the trimcap right and get the oscilator to stop ringing and all that
but the harmonic content pot doesnt seam to add or subtract hardly
any harmonics. I was really hoping someone might know what the
trouble is with it all, or if they just dont do very much.
And does any one reccomend making the trimcaps panel mounted or
should i just not do that. Id like to add as many pots to control it
as i can. Does anyone maybe know any cool mods i can add to it to
mess with the drum sounds alittle bit? OK thanks alot

I left out the harmonics pots and replaced them with resistors, since they
didn't do much on mine either. Instead of using trimmers I used pots for the
resonance, and placed them on the panel. So you can adjust the sound of the
drums and get them to sound just how I want them too.
