power requirements

power requirements

2006-12-15 by Mike Burnham

Hi Ken
do you have any info on how much current your modules consume. I am running a 7815/7915 regulator setup 1A etc.
what is the average consumption per unit?
I have

2 cynare
1 ASR
1 gate sequencer + CV outs
1 sequential switch
1 infinite melody
1 Pulse Divider
3 VCO
2 VCA
1 diatonic convertor
1 gated comparator
1 slope detector
1 serge phaser
1 burst generator
1 Bi-n-tic filter
1 wave multiplier

thats nearly 20 units
is this PSU ok to drive this many units - or is it a good idea to build another?
thanks
Mike

I don't actually measure my module's current use. It all depends on activity
etc, and + and - supply lines are rarely balanced, so figures when given,
are not really accurate.

That said, some modules draw next to nothing. You will probably get away
with all running on a 1 amp supply. Monitor the power rails. If they start
to droop, you will know you need more power. Also, if you start hearing the
VCOs though other modules when they are not patched, again, the supply is a
bit stressed. Make sure you have big enough heat sinks.
