Power Supplies & Current Sharing

Power Supplies & Current Sharing

2006-12-15 by Future Image

Hi,
I've got my big Power One PSU down in the garage, and I've been
thinking about the current it puts out. It gives out enough to power
literally hundreds of modules apparently, but how will this current be
shared? Will the modules just take what they need from the current, or
will all the current go into the few modules setup, therefore damaging
them?
How does current sharing work???
Thanks,
PSG.

The amp rating is a maximum value. It doesn't mean that the supply
forces 40 A (or whatever it says) through the things you plug in. This
is one of the most common misunderstandings about voltage and current.
Read up on what voltage and current really are.
If you plug just one module to it maybe draws 0.5 A or so, and that's
fine. If you plug in a hundred modules maybe they will draw 40 A in
total. That's also fine, because that's within the limit. If you plug
in more than that, you'll overload the PSU. That's not fine. Either it
will react by ducking the voltage to limit the current, blow a fuse,
or just keep giving the modules the power they need. In the latter
case, there's a risk of overheating the PSU, which is not a good idea.

Thanks a lot, that's answered my question completely!
