designs based on the 4024

designs based on the 4024

2007-05-29 by Jason Proctor

i'm noticing some chirrups in the output of my infinite melody when
it advances, and i'm wondering whether that's because the 4024 is a
ripple counter. it's not a huge problem, as i just pipe its output
through a sample & hold clocked from the same clock.

i just completed an analogue shift register, too. i didn't realise it
shifted before sampling (if that's the right way to say it). it's not
like a sample & hold where if you sample a pitch CV, and clock it
from the keyboard gate, then (assuming multiple triggering) it's a
no-op. the first output is always one clock behind. design?
construction problem? the 4024 strikes again? again, this isn't a
problem as such, i'm just curious.

Possible, though Ive not seen that before. The ripple effect is very quick -
I'd expect WELL above audio rates.

No. That is correct. Its outputs are 1, 2 and 3 clock pulses behind the
current CV. The current CV provides you with the "0" step CV, assuming that
CV is stable.
