Starting with CGS - much confusion

Starting with CGS - much confusion

2008-06-23 by nedmod

Hey all, i've been building modules for a little while now, namely
some of the elby euro CGS designs, and am looking to get things a
little weirder with an exclusive CGS system. My major issue is getting
my head around much of the wiring and powering of these units. The
pcbs are excellently detailed and ken's site does provide some
explanation yet at present i can't intuit them any further. I'm
considering a suitcase design for portability (as i have little space
as it is) with roughly 9 modules enclosed and perhaps some room for
expansion or refitting. So maybe like a little modular. I'm hoping to
incorporate the following into the design:
- VCO
- Digital Noise
- VCA
- Steiner (euro format boards)
- Psycho LFO
- Utility LFO
- Sub-oscillator
- wave folder
- mixer
Possibly over-ambitious. I shouldn't have too many troubles putting
these together if i have laid out schematics and pot/jack wiring
diagrams, but my major concern is powering them together. From what i
have read, all of these modules can run on +/- 15v. Is this correct?
If not, which modules would i need to alter or remove to retain
consistency? Also, if anyone has wiring diagrams for any of these
(particularly the VCO, expanded mixer [linked on the mixer page],
wave folder and digital noise) they would be much appreciated. I'll be
sourcing a PSU and will then begin panicking about wiring them to the
supply. Are there any particular tricks to wiring these to connector
boards? It's been a long one but thanks in advance for any advice, it
is all very welcome.

Hi
+/-15V is fine for these modules. A 1A supply will be plenty for your
selection and will be able to handle more modules when you decide to
build more.

Try building the easier modules first, as in the ones where the wiring
diagrams are supplied. Once you have done these you should be ready
for the more difficult modules.
I know it is a bit confusing trying to understand schematics when
starting out, but once you get some experience you will not need to
use wiring diagrams.

The VCO might be the hardest as there are so many options, have a good
look around to see other people's panels and read Ken's description a
few (many!) times before building.

Also the panels can be the most time consuming and/or expensive part
of building a modular. plus you have to look at them all the time. So
give a lot of thought to this part of your design.

cheers
Andrew

Hey Andrew, thanks for the advice. There's still more planning to do
but those hints will save me a lot of time.
