Burst Generator: switch wiring

Burst Generator: switch wiring

2002-02-17 by Jeffrey Pontius

Finally received some front panels, so I am attempting to wire up the
burst generator. How are the RAnge and Retrigger switches hooked up?

I'm not the most skilled at reading circuits, so
(1) Is the Range switch closed on High or Low?
(2) Is the Retrigger switch closed on retriggering or nonretriggering?

How can I deduce the closed positions from the circuit diagram?
Thanks, Jeff

>(1) Is the Range switch closed on High or Low?

Closed for low range. Closing the switch adds extra capacitance to the
oscillator/clock circuit, making it run slower - it takes longer to charge a
larger capacitance.

>(2) Is the Retrigger switch closed on retriggering or nonretriggering?

Open - retriggering
Closed - nonretriggering

Retrigger. When the switch is closed, the unit cannot be retriggered during
an event. (This is written under "Summary of inputs, outputs and controls"
on the web page.)

Working out the retrigger from the circuit diagram would not be easy, unless
you followed through the logic of the circuit - it is not immediately
obvious. The range switch works as described above.

Cheers,

Ken

Burst Generator

2002-02-18 by Jeffrey Pontius

My thanks to Ken for designing and pcb'ing a great little module.
Finished it this evening and spent some time trying it out on e.g's,
Klangwerk, filter 'rings', and a few other patches. Duration and End are
definitely useful features. I'm sure I've just touched the surface of its
uses. Jeff

Well now, THIS is interesting! I've only had a couple of minutes of
play time with this device (my grandson was reminding me that I
promised to play Mario Kart with him...)but the possiblities seem
truly endless. This is a very useful addition to the system.

Thanks again, Ken!

Yeah! I love this board too. At first it's quite overwhelming because
like you said the possibilities seem endless. The most unexpected results
I've gotten from it is when I plugged the output into my VCF's EG. It almost
made everything sound like it had an echo on it! Have fun!

Yeah, retriggering envelopes is great fun, especially w/ a Psycho or VC LFO
clocking it. You can also use "end out" as a trigger delay.
W/ a sequencer or arpeggiator (like on the Mono/Poly), you can do shorter
groups of notes instead of having it repeat over and over.

And so many more uses! One of those "sleeper favorites", where you find
yourself using it in more and more patches.

I am glad to hear all these positive comments, because I have two Burst
Generator boards and will be building a dual module soon. Mine will
have the variable pulse width pot, too. I know these will be important
to my style of synthesis, which frequently employs complex pattern
generators driven by semi-random sources.

Go here:

...and listen to the two simple audio examples of the Cyndustries version.

These little buggers are just too damn cool for words!

FYI the Burst Generator works on 12 volts. A great module.
