What makes the cassette interface not work is waveform distortion in the cassette recorder. If the machine has Dolby or any kind of auto-leveling function, turn it off. If that's no help, it may just be that the frequency response of that particular cassette recorder is too un-flat, and you'll never get it to work. You could always try a different recorder.
