performer fix/problems help!

performer fix/problems help!

2010-02-12 by asrdead

Hi,

Just acquired a performer and am attempting to fix the following problems any tips would be helpful as i'm a bit of a newbie in repair and schematics.

Problems:

No main output
volume levels not responding
eq section not working
strings 8/16 not working although one of the two lights up

working:

brass section seems ok
crescendo/sustain seems ok
signal out ok-so I hear some strings this way
all keys work
mod section works
resonance ok although seems a bit off? perhaps some adjustment?

SO: After studying the schematics I'm assuming the 1450/741 chips are bad since they seem to affect the strings/main section?
Im going to get some replacements and check it out. How about replacing caps?
any help would be appreciated
cheers

Hello,

Unfortunately, I can't really help you with troubleshooting, but all I can
say is that the Performer is a FANTASTIC keyboard and well-worth the effort
of restoring. It's the best string synth I've ever played.

well...it seems to be working..I'm not sure exactly what i did...
opened it up and pressed down on some ic's (which were all in sockets), cleaned up some sliders and well it seems to work now....except the volume slider on the brass but its not a real problem as it has an independent output anyway
it is a thing of beauty! all for $60

Re: performer fix/problems help!

Hi,

Electronics do deteriorate with time, some more so than others, as I've found on my Crumar Stringman which is 35 years old.

I would say, replace the chips first as chips aren't the most long lived of components. I'd follow by replacing ALL the electrolytic capacitors with like valued equivalents. What happens is the electrolytic in the capacitors dry up over the years and the values go adrift.

This happened to some caps on my Stringman, so I took the decision to replace all the electrolytics. The difference in tone is huge, it sounds much crisper now.

If you're based in the UK, I'm interested. How much?
