Its something of an open question as to what a monitor calibrator can check, by itself, that will prove its working properly; there's some circular logic there... but clearly it makes you feel better to have that feature in place.
Currently there's nothing for that in PFP right? What if one of the
LED's have blown or something like that?
Then it can't read white, and see it as white. Save a white tile measurement from your device, and if you have questions about the LEDs being blown or disconnected at a later date, remeasure the white tile again in the spot measurement tool, and see if the Lab value is similar.
It'll probably take up a lot
of ink and paper and time/effort to confirm that if there is nothing to
check the 'health' of the unit.
White does't seem very colorful to us, but it includes all colors, from the spectro's point of view. So a single white measurement is all you need to check all the LEDs.
Will the white calibration work as a
diagnostic tool?
No, but the white tile will.
I've been reading some other color forums and have found out that just
because someone has spent a lot of money on their gretag or xrite it
doesn't automatically solve or give them good color management. One guy
even had a brand new gretag 1photo become faulty.
The spectro in PFP is a more "solid state" device, and more repeatable, then other forms of spectros. Those are among its strengths. But its certainly possible for one to have hardware issues. Color management is a large and complex area. Users tend to assume that buying one or another product will solve all their problems instantly, and are sometimes disappointed to find that its not always that simple.
