I find that the HP profiles for HP media used with the DJ 30 are
generally very good, but the ones that they supply for third party
papers, e.g. Ilford Smooth Matte and Hahnemuehle Photo Rag, are poor.
I also print black and white images on HP media and find a slight
tinge of magenta in the highlights.
My question then is would PFP make third party papers usable, and
could I get good BW images using HP's PPP Satin with a PFP produced
profile? If necessary, I am prepared to add a small amount of
highlight tone to mask the crossovers.
My results on the DesignJet 30/90/120 printers is the PFP2 profiles for any of them are better than the HP profiles (even a third party article reviewing this question came to that same conclusion) and the PFP profiles are as good for third party papers as they are for the HP ones (you can linearize the Designjets to third party paper as easily as to HP paper). As for B&W, I don't find the DesignJet's inks to be capable of stable, neutral B&W, though a PFP2 profile should offer the best B&W that this system can manage. Gallery quality B&W will require a newer generation HP, Canon, or Epson graphics printer.
