Measuring Targets - a thought...

2007-10-21 by Doug Lenos

I have had some problems with a certain ink/paper combo - the 'reds' are coming out to strong and often skin tones look like they are sunburnt. My question is this... I have read here that some advocate placing several 'white' sheets of paper under the target - which I did - as you don't want the influence of a brown table on the target from the light bouncing back.
;
On a whim I did the opposite - I put a black, matte under the target - my thought is that the white would 'reflect' more light and 'brighten' the area being read - amplifying it - the black matte would do the opposite - leaving only the ink / paper to reflect.
So I took the same target and re-profiled it with the black under it - guess what? much better skin tones - in fact all the colors are less saturated and more natural on my prints... so I ask Tobe/Miller - is there any truth behind my findings - what are your thoughts?
