new monitor questions

2008-08-19 by bill_hansen20012001

I need to purchase an LCD monitor for photo editing, and I have three
questions about my choice.

Background - My OS is Win XP Pro. I use Photo Shop CS3 as my image
editing program.

I've been using the Spyder2 Pro to calibrate my old Dell CRT monitor,
and PrintFix Pro to calibrate my Epson R1800 printer. I've been very
happy with this arrangement.

But the CRT monitor has reached bayond the end of its useful 12-15
year life as a photo editing tool. I've decided to join the ranks of
those who view their images on LCD monitors as they edit them.

I've spent many, many hours researching this on multiple web sites. I
think I know what would work best, out of the LCDs available - but the
problem is that I can't afford the best, or at least I can't justify
spending those thousands of dollars solely on a monitor for
my "enthusiastic amateur" photo hobby.

I've settled on a compromise which I think might work well enough -
the HP LP2275, which has an S-PVA panel(I would have preferred an S-
IPS panel)with a 6ms refresh rate and 400cf/m maximum brightness.

Question one: Has anyone on this forum used this particular monitor -
and if so, how satisfied are you with it? What problems have you had
with it?

Question two: Given that I've been happy with the monitor calibrations
of my CRT monitor when using the Spyder 2 Pro, is there any reason to
replace that with the Spyder 3 Pro? Is there any reason to consider
the Spyder Elite (given that I'm not a techie, and so forth...)?

Finally, am I correct that as I begin calibrating an LCD monitor with
any of the Spyders, on a PC, I would use gamma 2.2?

Thanks - Bill Hansen
