CD - I saw that info in the help section. A little enlightenment on the "Certification" and "Recalibration" sections would be appreciated, especially with regard to the frequency. Given that each of them can be set from one hour to six months it would help to understand exactly what is being done within the program. Also, the LUT lookup can be set from one minute to 60 minutes - what is the advantage/disadvantage of a longer/shorter setting? I do compliment you on the improvements in the utility and appreciate your patience with me.
The improvements were definately more difficult than the patience; that part was easy.

As for the three functions, and their variables:

Certification is most likely to see use in larger studios and other companies. Tighter specs simply mean that the standards for CheckCAL and ReCAL are more stringent, and the Spyder icon will display as out of standards (slashed) sooner, than if a more liberal value had been chosen. I don't anticipate many individual users choosing this option.

ReCAL will nag you to recalibrate sooner, if a shorter timeframe is chosen, we've had options for this for years. Once a month is reasonable for many users, but some feel that weekly is the longest they are willing to go.

LUT checking is only an issue if you have things going on that might interfere. For most users once an hour is fine (certainly better then only at startup, as has traditionally been the case); especially on the Mac. But if you aren't doing things where the check competes for cycles, there is no reason to lower this setting.

Overall, I'd say its mostly those of an engineering mindset that will worry much about any of these settings, unless there is a specific issue that effects them. They are added for the special cases, with the assumption that most users will ignore them and leave them at defaults.

Expert Advice
Using the Updated Spyder3Utility
The latest versions of Spyder3Elite and Pro include an updated version of Spyder3Utility, which has been redesigned to be easier to use. The first list item is now "Explain Status." Selecting this item will bring up a floating window which contains information about your displays, including Certification status, Calibration status, and Ambient Light status.

S3Utility now has a tabbed Preferences pane with a General section for controlling the length of time dialogs are displayed, and choices of LED indicator function. An Ambient section offers choices for how often to check the ambient light. A Certification section offers a number of choices for Certification frequency, and a Recalibration section offers choices for frequency of Recalibration checks and reminders.
