Solux are incandescent proofing lamps. They run hot (as in burn yourself if you touch them hot), and have a fairly short life expectancy; not to burning out, but to losing their color temperature, they become more yellow with age. So they are generally not used as full-time studio lamps (daylight fluorescents are used for that) but instead are used only at the moment when you are checking a proof. They may be the most accurate emulation of daylight, but they are not an accurate emulation of other proofing lights, including expensive viewing boxes and booths, which more closely match desktop fluorescent lamps. Ott-lites are the most affordable brand-name daylight fluorescent lights, though there are many others. C.
