Enable or Not Enable ICM on Printer?

Enable or Not Enable ICM on Printer?

2006-09-20 by Rocky Egner

I am courious about the "Enable ICM" choose on my printer. I know that
during the Media Check and Print Target's that your printer is not to
have color managment enabled.

I found how to disable the color managment in the PrintFix Help
section For my particular printer (Canon i9900). But I have an option
to choose that is not addressed in the Help Manual.

In the "Print Type" window, I'm told to select "None". But just above
this is the choose to Enable ICM or not. I have found out that if I
check this box to Enable ICM that my "Print Type" window is grayed out
and I cannot make any chosses.

My questions is, do I Enable ICM and proceed w/media check and
printing color charts or, leave the ICM option alone and just select
"None" in "Print Type"?

No do not check or enable ICM and do set it to none.
You didn't ask but on the main tab also do not check "preview before printing" ever.

Douglas,

Why do you say "do not check "preview before printing" ever"? The
colors shown may be horrid due to the printer driver's inability to
properly handle the image data processed through the custom ICC
profile, but you can still check page setup to confirm that settings
are correct before committing to print (has saved me a lot of wasted
paper and ink!).

I agree with your (don't) Enable ICM/print type none advice. However,
I must confess I really don't understand what they do. Does anyone out
there know?

You can check the preview while in photoshop but using this option "preview before printing" can ad a extra profile when printing with photoshop handling the profile. There was a guy with the dreaded magenta cast and he mentioned in his workflow checking that box. He workflow was just like mine folowing Canons guide except that I had never checked the option, I checked the box and reproduced his magenta cast. It shouldn't be and I don't know exactly whats going on but it can cause problems.
