Printfix Pro and Designjet 130

Printfix Pro and Designjet 130

2007-01-31 by Byron

Is there anyone using this combination? If so I would like to hear
your experiences as I am particularly interested in improving upon the
stock HP profiles for Satin (and then of course, once owning Printfix
Pro, getting similar results on other papers).

I have a DJ130 here. It profiles just fine, it just has a few unique features to be considered. First, you need to calibrate your paper category (such as matte) using the exact paper you plan to profile. Then you print your PFP printer profiling target once this calibration is in effect (with color management turned off in the driver, or course). This will produce a target with preneutralized neutrals. Nice. Now build your profile, and print using the same settings as when you printed the target, choosing the profile in Print with Preview in Photoshop (or equivalent from other apps). The DJ130 is not a good choice for B&W prints, or long life prints on matte or art paper, but its fine for moderate life gloss and luster prints on the special swellable polymer media that HP provides. If you use more typical microceramic papers they will look great, but be very short lived prints.

Thanks David. I have a dj 130 so I understand the profiling
process unique to this printer and the media limitations as you
mention.

When you say it works fine, what does that mean? Hopefully it means
more than "it doesn't crash" but is it reasonable to expect it to
improve upon the (already quite good) HP Satin profile? Or to expect
it to bring the other media up to these levels?

If you could give me a flavor of your results in this regard it
would be most useful to make sure I'm not operating with unrealistic
expectations.

NOTE: I edit with a Spyder2Pro calibrated CRT in an almost dark room
and proof my prints under the D50(4700) Solux light.

Thanks,
Byron

I profiled the DJ 130 back before its release with ColorVision products, and compared results with the HP canned profiles as part of testing I was doing with HP. I found that our profiles were better than their profiles... though one needs to make allowances for preferences. And third party papers (ones that are appropriate and compatible with the printer, or course) are as profilable as HP media, so there is no problem there. PFP2 is improved over the CV products I was working with then, so I would expect even better results now...
