Colorvision profile error message at startup

Colorvision profile error message at startup

2007-07-12 by j0llyjump1ngju88y

I'm running XP on a Dell notebook and been fairly happy with prints on
an Epson 2200 after setting things up with Adobe Gamma. But I decided
to try to get a bit better and purchased a Colorvision Spyder3Express
and seem to have a problem. The software loaded fine and the
colorimeter does it's thing and tells me it created a profile called
spyder2express.icm in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color and that
this profile would now be loaded as default. The final colorvision
image that showsthe difference between the unprofiled and profiled
monitor was subtle but noticeably better, so getting that profile
loaded at windows startup seems very worthwhile.

When I boot the machine, I get a colorvision message box that says "no
calibration data for the profile 'sRGB Color Space Profile' for
monitor 'plug and play monitor.' Please select a different profile
using Profile Chooser [1168]". So I guess the colorvision profile
isn't loading - it's hard to tell either just in windows or in CS2 if
the dspaly most closely resembles the with spyder profile or without
(as I said, the differences were subtle and not being able to flip
from one to the other leaves me unable to tell).

Oddly, both the spyder3express.icm and the sRGB Color Space
profile.icm files can be found in the spool\drivers\color folder. I
don't understand why the colorvision message is referring to the sRGB
profile when it previously said it the spyder2express profile would
now be the default. I also don't understand why it's complaining about
the sRGB profile containing no data. And try as I might I can't figure
out what Profile Chooser is or how to use it.

I tried looking on Colorvision's site but ended up following some
links that tried to load all hundreds-of-megs of MS .NET framework in
order to load a profile chooser. That seemed a bit ridiculous.
Couldn't find any information here with some searches (or on dpreview
where I have also posted this query), but it's quite possible I just
don't know what to search for. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Right, we asked Windows to set this as the default profile for your display. There is a (well known, in our field ) bug where Windows fails to do so, and fails to send an error message. You have fallen victim to this Windows ICM2 error...

Oddly, both the spyder3express.icm and the sRGB Color Space

This is not odd, all Windows machines have an sRGB profile there, and any machine that you have profiled with a Spyder will have at least one Spyder-generated profile there as well. The problem is convincing Windows to use the Spyder profile, not the generic one...

Because of the Windows error noted above...

I also don't understand why it's complaining about
the sRGB profile containing no data.

sRGB isn't a 'real' monitor profile, so it contains no calibration data, only a simple profile definition. So when our startup utility tries to find calibration data to load, there is none.

And try as I might I can't figure
out what Profile Chooser is or how to use it.

Its a utility loaded with Spyder software. It should show via the start menu in the same spot as your Spyder software.

You can also select a monitor profile by right clicking on the desktop, going to properties, advanced, color management (or some such) and choosing the Spyder profile, setting as default, and saving these settings. Then restart, and you should not get the error message, and should see a "flash" as the video corrections are loaded.

Re: Colorvision profile error message at startup

I am in a very similar situation to the author of the original post
(even down to using Adobe Gamma and a Microsoft colour applet). I'm
running XP home on a Dell laptop and printing to a Epson r2400 and
have opted for a calibration package, in my case the Spyder 2 Suite,
for similar reasons.

My laptop has only the brightness/backlight option and, as far as I
can tell, no other tools for altering the display colour so I left
that option blank as I did my first calibration.

The end result was the same error message. And a sense of bewilderment
at what to do next.

I use Paint Shop Pro X as my graphics program ... the colour workspace
is the same as the one (default) generated by my digital pix (sRGB or
whatever ... not Adobe 1998) ... when I assign the profile created by
CVS2S the resulting rendering of digital images is awful. Obviously
I've done something wrong ... am just not sure what it is.

Also, I tried the Profile Chooser utility ... by default it shows only
the srgb color space profile (the correct name escapes me) in italics
as the only option ... when I display the full list, the profile
created by CVS2S is there in bold but I'm unable to select it. Again,
I'm doing something wrong or missing a step but don't know what it is.

Am grateful for the explanation of the Windows error message ... as
you might expect, users tend to think the message is the consequence
of something they've done ... it's nice to know otherwise.

Finally, I'm not quite sure how the profile created by this program
integrates with my camera (a small Coolpix), graphics program and
printer. Direction regarding this will be welcomed with grace.

Thx,
R.A. Paterson

Choosing your monitor profile as your workingspace is your error, the application should pick up your custom profile from the OS automatically, it is not assigned as the workingspace. So your bigger problem is getting your Spyder profile defined as your monitor profile by Windows.

Try my instructions for selecting at the OS level...

There is a workflow primer on this topic included in the PrintFIX PRO User Guide. Download the PDF of the UserGuide from www.colorvision.com and look at the tutorials at the end of it, to find the one that diagrams the workflow from camera JPG or cameraRAW through to workingspace, profiled monitor, and profiled printer.
