Paper white vs screen white

Paper white vs screen white

2009-08-16 by Jim Miller

Making some progress on getting printouts to match screen and noticed that the HP Advanced Photo Paper Glossy is distinctly yellower than the white on my freshly profiled Dell 2408WFP monitors that were profiled at 6500 2.2.
Not sure what to do about this other than reset expectations for a really white white on HP APP. Once reason for concern is photographing my daughter's' recent painting which has a very white white background upon which the image floats.
BTW, I found that replacing a magenta cart on the 9180 that was past expiration made a huge difference in print quality today. The prints had a heavy magenta cast which was significantly reduced with a new cart. Did a self calibration after replacing that cart. Still seeing more red than I should in the flesh tones however.
I plan on profiling the printer again before doing more prints using the Spyder Elite print thingy.
I was considering profiling the monitors at a lower temp than 6500. If the profiling of the printers doesn't bring screen/print closer.
Suggestions welcomed

Yes, a lower whitepoint will better match yellow media; but then what
will you do for cool media? Ideally softproofing using the printer
profile will correct the whitepoint, but it can be tricky.

Just a quick followup: I took a piece of HP APP Glossy home and compared it to the "white" background of the painting mentioned and the paper is definitely whiter when held side by side under the same light. So the paper won't be an issue. I just ordered a Solux D50 four fixture proofing lightbar which will eliminate lighting as a variable in evaluating prints. Should be here later this week.

Which brings up the issue of what "whiter" means. It can mean multiple things. One is higher L* values: brighter. Another is lower b* value (less yellow). A third is optical brighteners, which causes a lower measured b* value, but don't look blue to the eye, instead they make the media looks "white", and make a natural white viewed next to them suddenly seem yellow. The eye is adaptive, without the whitened paper in view, the natural one will look white.

Received the Solux lightbar and D50 lamps and a quick test before having to leave was that the light was much "whiter" and the prints appeared come closer to the screen. I plan to setup a print holder next to the monitor and properly mount the lightbar to do more evaluation.
Looks like an improvement so far.
