Problems

2009-11-12 by bill@bondobilly.com

I installed the Spyder3 Elite using Windows XP Service Pak 3. The monitor
that was calibrated is a Samsung 21 inch LCD SyncMaster 2443BWX.

I took a known image and printed it using two different monitors. The
images were placed on the same piece of Epson Lustre paper.

The two images do not match each other. One is much more green and the
other is almost right on.

So, have i done something wrong. The images were printed using CS4 and I
must admit confusion might have caused this. I do have a slight learning
disability that hit me when I was 61.

I found the documentation lacking and had to "wing" it's first use. Where
do I place the profile for the monitor? Does it go in COLOR / SETTINGS /
WORKING SPACES and do I set the paper in the Epson Pre-print Setup pages?
or do I set the paper in CS4?

Thanks in advance
Bill G

Unless you made adjustments to two copies of the test image, one on
each screen, until the two matched visually, then your description
doesn't make much sense. Simply bringing a test image up on a screen
does nothing to effect the image; I can display the same test image on
two screens that look very different, yet it will print identically in
both cases.

The display profile is automatically saved to the correct folder, and
automatically used. You DO NOT set anything is Photoshop to the
display setting, doing that would be incorrect, and cause unintended
inaccuracies. Paper has nothing to do with it in terms of the display
profile. There you would be talking about a printer profile, which is
a separate issue, and not covered by Elite; if you wish to build
custom printer profiles, that would require Spyder3Print or
Spyder3Print SR.

Monitor calibration (using the Spyder of whatever flavor or other monitor hardware calibration) with its monitor profile while somewhat related to printing, it is SEPARATE from the printing process so you may be confusing two separate issues.

The monitor profile created by the Spyder Elite is normally automatically placed in \WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color and then when you boot your system, the Spyder software loads the profile setting the video LUTs on your video card and that's pretty much the last time you have to do anything with the monitor profile for the session (until you reboot of course when the monitor profile will again be loaded automatically).

WORKING SPACE in Photoshop is something different--it "uses" the monitor profile (I'd suggest doing a bit of reading on Color Management to more fully understand how/why things are done/used)--and most people set the Photoshop working space to AdobeRGB--this should be one of the options available from within Photoshop when setting up your preferences. I'm still running Photoshop 7 so I'm not sure exactly where this is set in CS4 but in Photoshop 7, it's Edit > Color Settings > Working Spaces > RGB and select whatever you'd like--EXCEPT the monitor profile because it's not a Photoshop Working Space.

When printing, I generally select my paper profile via Photoshop's print screen and on the Epson printer side, after choosing the appropriate Epson paper type and paper size, I choose "No Color Adjustment" (via the Advanced option).

Hope that helps...
