light to view just printed photos

light to view just printed photos

2006-05-24 by Wim van Leeuwen

As a new member of this group I like to say Hello to you all, my name
is Wim van Leeuwen.
I already own for some time a SPIDER2, but today I received the box
containing PrintFixPRO.
As I use a Canon-printer with a CIS and so use non Canon inks, my
colors were way off with the standard profiles, but I must say the
profiles I made today are a great Improvement.
I am curious of, the kind of light, you use to inspect newly printed
photos. Do you have special "full spectrum lamps" or do you use a
solution that costs a lot less.
Please tell me about it....
Greetings,
Wim

I'm glad to hear your first PrintFIX PRO profiles are improving your prints. I don't know what third party inks you are using, but certainly with Canon inks, it takes hours, even days, before the printed colors stop changing. So you may want to remeasure one of your targets a day or two later and see if there is much difference in the measurements. If so, then wait before reading targets in the future.

As for print viewing, if your inks take time to settle to final color, then no light is going to offer accurate "wet" viewing. But assuming your inks are quite accurate right out of the printer, then a low cost daylight style desklamp is quite acceptable. This used to require an $89 (US) Ott-lite, but I can now find similar flip-open gray plastic lamps at Staples these days for $29. Unfortunately, you may not have the same options on the Netherlands, so you'll have to see whats available.
