Just a wild guess here... but if it's working in acoustic mode but not quiet mode, I wonder if it's got something to do with the split point between L and R... because it's possible to set up half the piano to be on one MIDI channel and the other half on a different channel... and you can slide the half-way point to wherever you like. In this case, if the split point is set to C3 and everything to the left of it is set to a bad MIDI channel (or set to a silent tone), then the result would be what you're experiencing.

Worth looking into before you start taking things apart. ;)

On that note (haha!!) with respect to the tone that you don't like, there are a few different ones to choose from. Have you cycled through all of them to see if there's one that's better?

I have a 5.5 year old Mark IV in which the I get no sound from the bottom two octaves when in the silent mode. The first key that plays is the third C# from the bottom. I get the same result from the headphones and speakers.
Any ideas on what's gone awry and what I'm looking at in repair costs? Also,is it possible to get a nicer sounding grand piano in the silent mode? I've never been happy with the electronic grand piano sound.
