Big milestone for our group

2001-11-01 by Todd Muncy

It has been a month short of two years since I founded this group
with a dozen or so charter members from the DUG group. As of now we
have 505 members!!
Our objectives (and results) have been as follows:

1. Share our non-commercial, non-classical, pianocentric midi
collections that we collected from the web, performed ourselves, or
perhaps had a friend or family member perform. We've been
reasonably successful, but I think we are all disappointed that the
bulk of the material in the "files" section of our site was uploaded
by the early members in the first few months of the group's
existence. With the notable exceptions of Derek Barnes and Doug
McKenzie (great stuff), the last 450 people to join have been
enjoying our collections, without sharing theirs.

2. Create an easy reference of fair market values for disklaviers,
to do for disklavier buyers what Edmunds does for car buyers. I
think we've been fairly successful with our "what I paid" database,
but again the number of entries is a lot smaller than the 500 we
would hope for. If you have a success story of avoiding overpaying
for a disklavier as a result of our efforts, please post it to the
group. If you haven't yet entered your info into the database,
please take 5 minutes to do so.

3. Uncensored email exchanges. Yamaha restricts conversations on
DUG to avoid upsetting dealers with pricing discussions and the
like. That is reasonable and understandable since they underwrite
DUG. Here we are free of such restrictions, for the price of a
couple ads embedded in our postings.

4. Exchange links to midi sites and other sites of interest to our
group. See the "bookmarks" tab of our site.

I need some feedback from the group at this point, and I will use
our site's polling feature to get it in a format we can all easily
see and review. Please take a minute to cast your votes on the
polls I generate and I will take the hours necessary to implement
the improvements the group wants.
