Re: [disklavier] Poll results for disklavier

2001-11-07 by Todd Muncy

I have just closed out my two polls on our web site. I'm afraid the poll below was rather naive of me. What I think I did, in effect, was to poll 4 chickens and 48 foxes on whether we should lock the hen house at night. I should have predicted these results. The other poll surprised me a little bit. Only about 20% of the respondents are here mostly for the files. File exchanges were the original raison d'etre for the group, but it has evolved into a great alternative to censored communication via DUG.
Does anyone think we could make use of the photo section for scanned sheet music? Right now we only have a picture of Groucho there. Our non-commercial midi performances are exempt from songwriter copyright claims because we are a members only club swapping private performances for no charge. Copyrighted performances are of course taboo. As always, if you see a midi you know to be commercial in the files section, notify me immediately and I will quickly remove it. I think there are larger legal problems with sheet music, unless the material is in the public domain i.e. classical and ragtime. Are there any attorneys in the group who could comment on this?
Someone might consider setting up a different (unlisted?) Yahoo group for this purpose. If we are not on firm legal ground, I won't do anything that would risk having this group shut down.
Comments please.

Subject: [disklavier] Poll results for disklavier

The following disklavier poll is now closed. Here are the
final results:

POLL QUESTION: The bulk of our midi file collection
came from a few early members and very
few new members are contributing.
Should we establish a policy giving
new members set time limit within
which to upload a contribution to the
files section in order to retain
membership?

CHOICES AND RESULTS
- Yes, require a contribution, 4 votes, 7.69%
- No, stick with voluntary system, 48 votes, 92.31%
