Poll on banning attachments

2001-12-05 by Todd Muncy

The majority has spoken. Attachments to posts to this group will continue to be permitted. I suggest that you include a mention of the attachment's contents and safety when including them.
Extra caution is recommended to all with any email that has an attachment. Most important rules are as follows.
  1. Don't even think of opening files ending in .pif .scr .vbs or .exe, unless you were expecting it, know who sent it, and completely trust the contents.
  2. File names with double extensions are almost always a virus! i.e. filename.mp3.scr - never open them!
  3. Beware of files sent from people you know, that you weren't expecting, with generic messages like "I sent this to you so you might help me". These viruses (technically worms) infect your friend's computer and then mail copies of themselves to the contents of their address book with your friend's return address. The actual return email address is often very slightly modified to prevent you from warning them by hitting "Reply To". This is true of that last worm recently sent to our group, which puts an underscore(_) character in front of the reply to address. You wouldn't have noticed in this case since all "reply to's" are changed to the group address rather than the individual.
  4. Always run a good quality combo virus/email scanner like Norton Anti-virus 2002 (now XP compatible). My copy is configured to update it's definition file daily automatically via the web connection. For more info go to www.symantec.com . If you have a broadband connection, you can buy a downloadable copy of the full version or the upgrade. Don't do this if you have dial-up. I downloaded Norton Internet Security yesterday (Anti-virus + Firewall) and it was 46MB! While it took only 5 min on my ultra-fast 9MB/min satellite connection, it would have taken 10 hours over a 28.8 dial-up connection.
  5. As the sergeant Phil used to say on Hill Street Blues: Be Careful Out There!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
