Newbie Questions

2001-12-17 by blee

Hi all,

I recently joined this group to find out more about the Disklavier
line, as I am contemplating a purchase of one in the not-too-distant
future. Other than one trip to my local piano store and browsing
the Yamaha site I haven't found much more than just high-level
information. Some of the questions I have are:

- What is the warranty that Yamaha provides on the Disklaviers?
Surprisingly I can't seem to find this anywhere on their site.

- The local salesman talked about the different generations of
Disklaviers and how the technology has progressed over the years.
Although this is all good, one concern I have is that the technology
will continue to change and what I buy today may soon be considered
obsolete. For example, with the advent of DVD-audio and Super Audio
CD technology, will Yamaha move to one of these formats over the
current CD-based technology? I kind of accept these rapid changes
in most types of consumer electronics, but when you're talking about
a product that costs tens of thousands of dollars that's a different
story. Any thoughts or comments?

- The local store was selling the DC2A for $29k, supposedly a $10k
reduction over full retail. Is this considered a fair price? From
what I can see in the group database that is still a few thousand
more than others have paid - has Yamaha bumped prices up lately?

- The local salesman also indicated that as you go up the model line
that prices go up proportionally, but one exception was the jump
from the DC2A to the DC3A, i.e. the percentage increase is higher.
Can someone tell me if there's a logical reason for this? Is there
technology that is incorporated in the DC3A and up that the DC2A
doesn't have?

Sorry for all these newbie questions whose answers are likely
obvious to many of you, but I'm just trying to educate myself on the
Disklaviers as much as I can before I commit to a purchase. Thanks
in advance for all your help!
