Re: [disklavier] DKC100XG upgrade

2014-12-26 by George Frederick Litterst

Good afternoon, everyone.

Fred, the DKC100XG indicates that this is a playback-only grand. In the simplest situation, the DKC-850 can be introduced as a MIDI add-on unit. Personally, I see little to be gained by using the DKC-850 as an add-on unit in this context. You won’t get DisklavierRadio or DisklavierTV, and you’ll lose the floppy drive. You will gain the ability to play MIDI data from a computer via USB, but you currently have the ability to play MIDI data from a computer using a USB MIDI interface. About the only things that you gain are internal song storage plus the ability to play song files from a USB devices, such as a USB flash drive.

If you want to use the DKC-850 as an replacement control unit and enjoy expanded benefits, you’ll need to call Yamaha Piano Service to see what the options are. I know that they have a couple of Mark II-to-Mark IIXG upgrade kits available. Anyone who upgrades a full function Mark II to a Mark IIXG can then replace the control unit with a DKC-850. I am not sure if this is an option in the case of a playback-only model. It is hypothetically possibly that all you need are a couple of replacement circuit boards in order to be able to proceed to adding the DKC-850 as a replacement control unit. Best to discuss this with Yamaha Piano Service: (800) 854-1569

I have a DKC-850 on my piano, and I have a couple of inexpensive, 3rd party USB floppy drives that work just fine with it. However, many USB floppy drives do not. Personally, I would use computer software to convert all of my floppy disks to files that I store on my computer and then copy them to USB media.
