Re: [disklavier] Mk-IV: How do I program "Thru"

2015-09-05 by Bill Brandom

Kevin, good response, during all I my years with Mark IV, it has been quite rare for someone to want their MIDI files to player "louder" on their piano. Most people ask how to have them play softer.

I haven't followed this thread, but I think the short answer is "no".

A midi file is just a midi file. Normally, these are added to the Disklavier through the "FromToPC" folder, or on a thumbstick, or something like that. At that point, behind the scenes, the Mark IV adds the midi file to the song database. It is the song database that stores associated settings that correspond to a given midi file. Furthermore, it is also in this database where you get to choose the velocity curve. I believe you are running into an issue because the default velocity curve is Soft80, and you would like it to be Thru. As far as I know, there is no way to change that default value...But once you change it to Thru, it should stick. I say "should" because it actually wont. Not unless you actually copy that Midi file to the Mark IV's internal hard drive. Otherwise, every time the external storage changes, or is refreshed, it rebuilds the database for that storage, and all of your changed data will revert back to the defaults.

So, your recipe should be something like:
1) Copy MIDI file to "FromToPc"
2) Copy Song from "FromToPc" to "User"
3) Play the song, and change the velocity curve.
4) Live happily ever after

If there were more demand for this sort of thing, I could have added functionality to DKVBrowser to automate step 3 when you did step 2, but, honestly, in all the years I've been involved with this, this is the first time this has come up that I am aware of.

Hi and thank you for your input. What I am trying to accomplish should be , but apparrently isn't, a setting that can be accessed and adjusted. Nothing more or less, I would just like to not have to save the file AGAIN, on my Disklavier to achieve what should be a simple fix.

I know I can be quite dense when it comes to simplicity. And just for kicks, let me repeat what I am looking to do. I would like to save my midi file, from my computer program, to play the DK file as a "Thru" velocity curve, not as a "Soft 80" velocity curve.

Is there a software "button" that accomplishes the above?

Thank you again for your input, I do appreciate it.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
