Re: [disklavier] Digest Number 3224

2016-03-03 by George Frederick Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

Prior to the Mark II, the Disklavier did not respond to MIDI volume commands. For older instruments, you need to reduce the note-on velocities of the notes in order to make playback softer.

I have not experimented with the volume control feature of Sweet MIDI Player on the iPad. If it globally reduces the note-on velocities, then the Wagon Grand will play softer. If, instead, it sends out Controller 7 messages (MIDI volume) or Controller 11 messages (MIDI Expression, which is functionally similar to MIDI Volume), then there will be no difference in playback on a Wagon Grand.

Starting with the Mark II, the Disklavier has been responsive to controller 7 and, by default, expects controller 7 to be set to 100. Some MIDI files that you find on the Internet both set controller 7 to 127 for the piano track (the highest setting) and use very high note-on velocities. This combination results in an excruciatingly loud sound.

Regards,
PianoBench
