would not be terribly difficult to make a midi file splitter. if there were enough demand i could convert one of my existing programs to do the job. i think the easiest method for a total novice would be to have a midi file player that would split off a file every time you clicked a certain key while it was playing. this would be pretty easy to write but as with any programs it is the details that make a simple program get pretty complicated. adding appropriate meta data and changing files names are all possible but to add all the options that users might want would increase the programming job considerably. how about a player that had the usual play pause stop buttons and that you could interrupt at any point with a click of a button of key and then enter the name you wanted for the file split off?
