Re: [disklavier] Upgrade to E3 Series Piano

2018-01-08 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

Ralph, the E3 manual for the Standard and Pro versions states that it records in SMF Type 0 format only but it plays SMF 0, SMF 1, and E-SEQ.

The only difficulty that you might have is getting a USB floppy drive that can read your old E-SEQ floppies. People have reported issues with various drives. This morning, I attempted to read an E-SEQ floppy using my DKC-850. The DKC-850 did not recognize the disk. When I switched floppy drives, the DKC-850 recognized the disk.

I recommend that you undertake a one-time task of getting all of your E-SEQ files copied to your computer for safe-keeping, and then copy them to USB flash drives for use in the Disklavier. For long term compatibility, it makes sense to convert the song files to SMF as well.

To be clear: If your floppy disk with E-SEQ files is readable on the E3, the E3 will play the instrumental MIDI tracks found in PianoSoft Plus files.

Regards,
PianoBench

The DKC-850 uses the serial port when connecting to Mark IIXG and Mark III pianos (thus replacing the original control unit). The DKC-800 uses the blue and green digital ports to connect to the E3. (Of course you have to use the MIDI ports when connecting the DKC-850 to Mark II and older Disklaviers.)
