PianoDisc systems can be retrofitted to virtually any grand or upright piano, including Yamaha. I believe they play midi type 0 files only. Disklaviers are available only as a factory installed option on Yamaha Grand, Upright and Grand Touch Pianos (go to Yamaha.com for complete selection and more details). The latest models play Midi 0, Midi 1 or e-seq (Disklavier native format) files. For more info on PianoDisc, go to http://members.aol.com/pdtek/piano.htm . This site belongs to Dave Bunch, a PianoDisc technician who runs an almost identical group to this one for PianoDisc owners. There is a link on that site that will subscribe you to his group or you can subscribe directly with this link: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/PianoDiscUser I can't offer an opinion of my own on the PianoDisc system, since I've never seen or heard one. Another member of the group with a 7' Yamaha retrofitted with PianoDisc swears by it, particularly its ability to play at very low key velocities (quietly). Best to have your friends check out both before making a purchasing decision. Also print the pricing database from our site before purchasing a Yamaha, it could save them thousands! Personally I swear by my Grand Touch. It's 30MB of digitally sampled ROM (from Yamaha's best concert grand) sounds as good as any acoustic baby grand I've heard in the showroom. In the real world, it sounds much better because it is always perfectly tuned and never needs tuning. It has the additional advantage of being available in a 3' deep model (fits easily in many rooms & its gorgeous), as well as a 5 footer (identical piano and sound, more furniture). You also gain the advantage of two forms of volume control, the velocity control on the disklavier controller and the master amplifier gain which will give you total volume control. It also can be set to three reverb modes (room, hall 1, hall 2) with a master reverb gain control. -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Messana <tony@...> To: disklavier@... <disklavier@...> Date: Monday, January 03, 2000 5:20 PM Subject: [disklavier] PianoDisc >What is the difference between a Pianodisc and a Disklavier system?
