I forgot to mention (and remind myself!) that several months ago I set my hotmail to only receive email from the 12 entries in my address book. This means I don't get any private replies. So I will continue to sign my posts with an email address that will accept private replies. Were there any answers to my questions about how to edit "controller 7"? I have recently rediscovered the differences between tracks and channels in MIDI; and volume and velocity. These words seem so similar in the English language, that the nuances escaped me. If I finally understand this, controller messages affect an entire MIDI channel, and velocity affects a SELECTED track. So if you want to make the MIDI files play your piano more quietly, you edit the "controller 7" values for channels 1 and 2; OR you first have to select a track (make sure it is assigned to channel 1 or 2) and scale the velocities in the player roll window of most sequencer programs. You can always find out what the value is by viewing the events window. I also got the impression that when you are editing MIDI files in a sequencer program, you don't get to hear the immediate results. You must first close the file you edited, then re-open it. And the other thing I think I learned was that 0 equals 100 when it comes to a number that describes velocity (on a scale of 0-127). Therefore, if the default value for a Pianosoft file is 0, and you want to make it play your piano more softly, you would change this number to -40 or use 60 if the original value was 100. So if you were scaling velocities, you would say something like 60% to turn it down, or 120% to make it louder. (?) If you are trying to turn down a MIDI file that only has piano parts, you can use Veloset, but if you want to turn down a MIDI files that also has the ensemble parts, you may want to separate the piano part and give it a lower value than the ensemble parts or you might not hear them. Please correct me where I am wrong as I need to be able to explain this in very simple terms to others!
