I can suggest one more way to format a 720k DOS diskette for use on a WInXP machine. My WinXP laptop will read and write 720k diskettes but will not format or reformat them, as has been confirmed in previous messages. I use my IMac to format these disks. It works only if you use a DD diskette or possibly an HD diskette that has had the proper holes covered. (I haven't tried it with an HD diskette.) Using an external Imation Superdrive (because as you know the iMac has no internal floppy disk) I insert a 720k DD/DS diskette and format as 720k DOS in response to the prompt. Then I put the 720k-formatted disk into the WinXP laptop and set the Windows Explorer view for "show hidden files." (I did this one time and have not had to change it. From Tools menu, select Folder Options, then View tab, then Advanced settings, then select (show hidden files.") I then delete the finder, openfldrlist, and whatever other hidden files were placed there by the Mac. Don't know if those hidden files will interfere on the PC, but I remove them just in case.
