Re: [disklavier] protecting the controller

Unplug the DKV when you are not using it and put a blanket over it. You
could also put one of those portable gates around the unit, but it is only a
matter of time before he figures out how to use the remote!

I have been teaching my 20-month old grandson that my DKV is not a toy. He
is only allowed to touch it with direct supervision - and that includes
little rituals like washing his hands and choosing a disk. So as not to
discourage him from exploring music, I bought a $15 keyboard at Target he
can play with anytime. When he is a little older, he will be allowed to use
the portable Yamaha PSR270 keyboard (and the baritone ukulele and recorder I
purchased just for him!).

It is important to teach children that keyboards should only be played with
their fingers - not knuckles, palms of hands, or hands holding little toys!
A good bang on the keys while holding a little car in their hands can chip
the keys and break an action part. Little toys finding their way behind the
key cover can bend those laser shutters. Not to mention the possiblities
for damage when kids try to put coins between the keys! I am continuously
amazed at the numerous different kinds of objects I have pulled from inside
pianos - especially the dead flying squirrel that got its neck broken in the
sustenuto mechanism when the kids were playing with the pedals!

I still think the ultimate solution is the word "no" and mean it! No wonder
my kids called me Ghengis Mom!
