Since you said you can play MIDI files on your laptop but not your disklavier, my guess is you haven't set your MIDI default device correctly in Windows XP's control panel. Couple things to try:
In Windows XP, go Control Panel, and then Sounds and Audio Devices. Go to the Audio tab. At the bottom of the page, there is a MIDI music playback group box. Be sure the Default Device is set to your USB driver. If set correctly, MIDI sound should not come out of your laptop's speaker.
If that was set correctly, another thing to try is to check you cable. Swap the In and Out around.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [disklavier] Midi help
I purchased the usb Uno by midiman. I installed the the xp drivers-
it shows successful. Device manager shows the drivers etc. The
nidi files play on my HP laptop but I'm not able to get the in or
out lights on the Uno to light. Only the usb light on the Uno
lights. I'm using the group player.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for te help.
