Re: Player Piano Music Roll Midi Files

2004-02-02 by Terry Smythe

Just a brief note to let all know I've just uploaded my ninth
batch pf player piano midi files emerging from out of my roll
scanner, all part of the project to capture and help ensure
preservation of their content. This ninth batch has 160
titles in it, summing in total to 1425 titles so far, with many
more to come. They may be accessed by clicking on:

As before, all these files are in Midi Type 1 format, with their
identifying data contained within the tracks. Conversion to
Midi Type 0 will delete this data, so all are encouraged to keep
a copy of them separate from your playing files, so they can be
referred to for composer and artist.

This batch of player piano roll scan files represent the Law of
Unforeseen Consequences in a very positive way. To my complete
surprise, a number of people contacted me quite unexpectedly and
kindly offered rolls for scanning. These gift rolls are included
within this batch.

Special thanks go to the Lang family, descendents of Larry
Conley, a prolific composer of popular music at the turn of the
century, for making available 21 rolls of Larry's compositions.
Special thanks also to Larry Fletcher for an outright gift of
rolls left over from when his family did have a player piano, to
Milton Schenk for the loan of the Duo-Art rolls in this batch,
to Shirley Kayes for the loan of some delightful rolls from out
of her roll collection, to Harold Klassen for the gift of a
bunch of rolls in very poor condition out of which some great
tunes were extracted, and to Lanny Bergthold for the loan of
some rolls out of his collection. All very much appreciated.

If by chance there are others out there inclined to contribute
piano rolls to this preservation project, they would be most
welcome. It matters not that these rolls might have torn or
missing leaders, may have broken or missing spool ends, may have
ragged edges, may not have their original boxes or labels, etc.
The only real concern is about rolls whose leaders are missing
into the music perforations, at which point they have little
value. I would ask that you contact me personally before sending
them through, to determine most efficient and least costly
shipping.

And as before, these midi files are made available for personal
enjoyment. They may not be used for commercial purposes.

Regards,

Terry
