Yes.
This is a somewhat confusing point. Different programs give different names to this event. Also, I have occasionally seen a MIDI file that confuses whether this event is used to name the song or to name a track. (Of course, track names can only occur in Type 1 SMFs, not Type 0 SMFs; sequence names can be used in both.)
You might want to get one of the SMFs from the Piano-e-Competition (www.piano-e-competition.com) and see how that event is applied.
