Re: [disklavier] Cleaning my piano...

2005-01-18 by Robert Welcyng

Bob,

I assume you have a black so-called ebony (actually polyester) finish.
The mit or cloth by itself is not likely to remove grease, but instead,
smear it. I'd first try a soft cloth like a diaper or an old T-shirt
with Yamaha's liquid polish on it. If that doesn't work, try some
Windex and a cloth. If that still doesn't do it, call the dealer. In
the meantime, decontaminate your mit with a gentle washing with soap and
warm water.

To help keep the inside of the piano clean, close the lid when you are
not using the piano. You can use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to
get at the accessible places. Buy a length of 1/4" or 3/8" plastic
tubing. Put a small dust cloth over the end of the tube and attach it
to the tube with a wooden plug in the tube opening. Run the tube and
cloth between the sound board and strings. My piano tech offered to
blast the interior and escapement of my piano using his air compressor.
That might have worked. However, not wishing to send the drapes to the
cleaners, I declined.
