MIDI files and Disklavier

2000-09-11 by Carol Beigel

I have been trying to sort out the MIDI capabilities of the various
Disklaviers. I recently saw a comparison of the different control
boxes used on them, but can't find it again! Please correct me if I
am wrong with the following conclusions.

All Disklaviers can play music downloaded from
www.globaljukebox.com. Some Disklaviers will require that these
files be stored on double density diskettes.

All MarkIIXG and MarkIII Disklaviers record in both ESEQ and standard
MIDI 1 format. THese units also play SMF format 0 files, and any PC
formatted diskette will do; both HD (two holes) and DD (one hole)

Playback-Only grands and MX80 series play ESEQ and Standard MIDI
format 0 files only. The files must be put on Double density
diskettes only (one hole).

Most of the MIDI files on the internet are MIDI format 1 files. They
can easily be converted to format 0 files using the MIDI Converter
program available for free from:

http://209.144.99.11/SUPPORT/SUPPORT.HTM

Many of the old timey player rolls have been converted to MIDI thru
computer emulation, so with a Disklavier, you can have it all!

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
