Larry, when you turn down the volume on the MX85, there comes a point at which the soft pedal (left pedal) is engaged automatically. The soft pedal on an upright works by moving a horizontal bar that, in turn, moves the hammers closer to the strings. As a result of the bar moving the hammers closer, you know longer have the complete hammer action resting on the back of the keys. This, in turn, can result in the key level changing a bit.
It sounds to me as though something may have caused the left pedal or its linkage to become stuck. If you want to investigate this yourself, you can open up the top lid of the piano and remove the lower front panel under the keys. By doing so, you may be able to trace the linkage of the soft pedal to the bar that moves the hammers and see what is going wrong.
Otherwise, it is time to call in your piano technician.

An oldie but a goodie, I have a MX 85 that I bought in 1993. It has served me well over the years and still plays just fine. As many of you know when the volume was turned down on these models the keys lowered themselves, and when the volume was turned back up, or the disklavier was turnied off, the keys came back up to the normal level. My piano recently stopped bringing the keys up to the normal level when the volume is turned up or the disklavier unit is turned off.Any suggestions?Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year.
