That is one of those questions you can ask of 5 audio engineers and get at least 8 different answers! From what I have seen, if you use a small microphone that sortof looks like a cigar, and place it under the lid and close to the strings, you will get a brighter, more jazzy sound. If you place 2 condensor microphones in an XY pattern within about 4-6 feet from the back of the piano, you will get a fuller sound and less noise from the dampers and pedals. However, using a condenser mic means you need preamps. I use an Eiderol UA25 (digital audio converter) with 2 microphone inputs that have a preamp. I think MOTU also makes one. Since you own a Disklavier, you can set the keyboard out through the audio out under the the piano directly into your digital converter and not even need microphones. I have a client who is a music teacher, and she uses this technique to have her students make a CD of their piano playing each Christmas. Or, you can take a MIDI file of your Disklavier playing, and run the piano part through a VST piano (virtual piano) and burn the resulting audio file to a CD. There is a whole new world out there learning to make audio recordings of your Disklavier!!
