Re: [disklavier] Linux Ubuntu can't play midi through disklavier III

Hello there,

It might be a few things here, firstly is there a linux driver for that USB to MIDI cable? If you are lucky there might be some generic chipset that is used in this device, otherwise you might need to buy one that actually has a linux driver. If you can't get past this point then nothing else will help.

If you have a linux driver, then you can simply test things with a standard midi player for linux, you should be able to select the output to be the USB out etc.

But before you give up, the other option is to use a virtual windows box, there are heaps of options floating about including the popular VMWARE for linux. Ofcorse this means you need to run windows within the linux box, but you could make a really light weight setup and it should run pretty well. Even intergrate the actual application API into the linux desktop!

Using wine is fine if you have a linux driver for the USB device in the first place.. wine is pretty mature these days and if you are just playing midis then there would be hundreds of old/free windows apps that would probably run fine. But most problems with wine is the actual setup, people have a good rate of success by copying an actual working windows xp directory for it's use...

Otherwise, if you insist on using linux, then you should get an old soundblaster or a sound card with proper midi outputs AND that is known to work with linux properly.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Philip

Subject: [disklavier] Linux Ubuntu can't play midi through disklavier III

I finally got tired of Windows and installed Ubuntu Linux on my old laptop I use to play midi files on my Yamaha Disklavier III. When I had windows, I used Van Basco's Software and added songs from the hard drive to the play list and pushed play. The midi played on the piano. I had bought a $10 midi cable like this one

http://cgi.ebay. com/USB-MIDI- Keyboard- Interface- Converter- Cable-Adapter- /280483295330? cmd=ViewItem& pt=LH_DefaultDom ain_0&hash= item414e1b7062

from Ebay and everything was working great. Now I have the same hardware (cable and computer) but different software. Can anyone point me to the right direction of how to get everything to work again please? The midi's are playing through laptop's speakers but nothing going through the cables to the Disklavier. Please help, I hate to be going back to Windows.
