I discovered my problem. The Wireless Mode on each of my Airport units (including the Base unit) has to be set to "Participate in WDS Network". When you use the "Wizard" where the Airport Utility guides you through set up (pressing the "Continue" button rather than the "Manual Setup" button), even when you specify "Join Network" it does not set up remote units in "Partcipate in WDS Network." This is easy to fix, however (I discovered). After you use the automated approach from the Airport Utility (that is, not Manual mode to set up Express units), then revisit each unit with Airport Utility, but in MANUAL mode, then CHANGE Wireless Mode (under the WIRELESS tab) to "Participate in WDS Network." I think the difference between "Join" and "Participate" is that in the Join mode, you can hook up Printers to the remote unit through a USB cable, but the remote unit itself does not rebroadcast the WiFi signal to extend its range. Participate rebroadcasts the signal. I am using Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, and Airport Utility Version 5.5.3. Thanks for the comments. Steve
